Israel Brief

Wednesday, November 4

Trump calls time on Israel's military aid, and by morning the arms sales that are left run through a Democratic Congress.

Iran's parliament speaker says Americans voted against war with Iran last night, and he'd like them to know he agrees. Trump told the Financial Times before the polls closed that he's already getting what he wants. He may not need much persuading. At home, Likud is waiting on the Shin Bet to tell it something the count didn't, and the people who ran it showed their work.

Flash Brief: The Day in 90 Seconds or Less

  • Military aid: Trump says American military aid to Israel ends in December, and that Netanyahu brought it up first. See Israel and the World.
  • Congress: Democrats take both chambers, and Gregory Meeks, who held up a 2,000-pound bomb sale, gets House Foreign Affairs. See Israel and the World.
  • Chemical weapons: Israel warns Washington that Iran may put chemical agents on missiles, and CENTCOM has strike plans ready. See The War Today.
  • Hormuz: The Guards claim four more tankers mined in the strait, and Rezaei says Washington's answer to Iran's conditions isn't convincing. See Briefly Noted.
  • Lebanon: The 7th Brigade comes home after eight months in south Lebanon and about 3,500 Hezbollah sites destroyed. See The War Today.
  • The count: The elections committee certifies the result after the biggest audit it has ever run, and Herzog opens consultations this afternoon. See Inside Israel.
  • The draft: Shas recommends Netanyahu on his pledge for Torah students, and United Torah Judaism's seven seats are still in play. See Briefly Noted.
  • Providence: Rhode Island's capital votes three to one to keep its pension out of "apartheid" states, and never names Israel. See Israel and the World.
  • Islamic State: Israel has broken up 28 Islamic State plots since October 7, against 18 in the nine and a half years before. See Briefly Noted.
  • Horizon Europe: Draft EU research rules write the Genocide Convention into a "European values" test, and Israeli diplomats are working the fine print. See Briefly Noted.
  • Syria: Damascus arrests a Hezbollah-linked cell carrying explosives meant for the Homs refinery. See Developments to Watch.

Jerusalem hasn't seen anything in writing behind the aid announcement, and Trump hasn't said there is any. Plenty of what's coming this week will arrive the same way, a statement first and the paper later, if it shows up at all. The things Israel can point to have numbers on them, and the ones out of south Lebanon took a brigade eight months to collect.
